  1. I've seen this used in a recent conference by a co-speaker. To extend the analogy a bit, however, remember Spain: General Franco, out of fear of a French land invasion using the railway to rapidly deploy military hardware, decided to pick another gauge for the spanish railways. Great, except, Franco and his policies didn't lasdt, whereas the railway infrastructure did. The result is that Spain is practically cut off from the pan-European high-speed rail network. Moral? Don't confuse standards and policies

  2. If only Franco had hired some decent, and reasonably senior experts...well, we'd certainly be able to travel by high speed rail from Paris to Barcelona.

    ;-p
